Namji Dowayo fertility doll from Cameroon – carved wooden figure with beaded decoration
approx. 56 cm Weight 2 kg
This expressive Namji or Dowayo fertility doll originates from northern Cameroon and is one of the best-known symbolic figures of Central African tribal art. Its striking geometric design with widely splayed arms and legs, along with its rich ornamentation of beads and decorative elements, gives the figure its unmistakable presence.
Namji fertility dolls (also called Namchi) were traditionally used as protective and fertility symbols. They accompanied young women and were considered an expression of prosperity, offspring, and familial blessings. Today, original and older examples are valued worldwide as important testimonies of African art and ethnographic culture.
The sculpture is carved from wood and displays an authentic patina that has developed over the years. The applied rows of beads and decorative elements emphasize the characteristic style of Namji figures and make each piece a unique collector's item.
A fascinating ethnographic work that is equally convincing in a tribal art collection and as an extraordinary eye-catcher in modern, wabi-sabi, boho or ethno interiors.
