Pair of finely carved, signed Japanese netsuke with two classic figure motifs.
The set consists of a seated sage or Rakan with a long beard and a fisherman or fishmonger with a large fish and basket. Both figures have Himotoshi (string holes) and individual artist signatures.
Particularly appealing are the meticulously crafted details: finely engraved garment patterns, expressive faces, beautiful patina of use, and the intricately integrated cord guides. The figures were made by different carvers, yet together they form a harmonious collector's pair.
Upon examination of the structure and patina, the material appears to be antler, stag horn, or similar organic carving material.
These traditional Japanese miniature carvings were originally part of clothing and served as a counterweight for small containers worn on the obi belt. Today they are sought-after collector's items of Japanese art and cultural history.
