Finely carved Japanese Katabori Netsuke depicting a seated man with a pumpkin (Hyōtan).
The figure is crafted with great detail: fine lines on the robe and beard, a compact form, and two himotoshi holes for the fastening cord. The underside is smooth and displays the typical base of a traditional netsuke. Material: presumably hand-carved from light hardwood (probably boxwood), with natural patina and visible tool marks.
The pumpkin (hyōtan) is considered a symbol of protection, good fortune, and longevity in Japan. Netsuke were originally worn as functional buttons on kimonos and are now highly sought-after collector's items.
