Jan Voss spent his early childhood and youth in Marne in Holstein until he was sent to the Plön Castle boarding school in 1953. From 1956 to 1960 Voss studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He has lived in Paris since 1960. From 1966 to 1967 he was a guest lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. From 1987 to 1992 he was a professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in Paris. He had his first solo exhibition in 1962 at the Galerie Baier in Mainz. Between 1969 and 1992 Jan Voss, as a member of the German Artists' Association, took part in a total of twelve exhibitions in the DKB's major annual exhibitions.
The basic theme of his painting is the "order" of a constantly moving chaos of a difficult and detailed situation. Jan Voss uses numerous materials and techniques in his works. He works with color-intensive paintings on canvas and with finer drawings that seem like comic-like stories and feature many details. In 1968 he took part in the 4th documenta in Kassel with four pictures.
He also created wood and paper reliefs and watercolors. All of his works are characterized by an accumulation of different color and form elements that interlock, overlap and are connected by signs and lines. Initially only in the second dimension, Voss expanded this form of expression to the third dimension and began to crumple, fold, tear and saw his pictures in the 1980s.
