Original signed figure study by Hans Breinlinger (1888–1963), dated 1962
An expressive original drawing by the important Constance artist Hans Breinlinger. The work depicts a standing female figure captured with a few energetic black lines. The reduced formal language lends the representation a special tension between figuration and abstraction.
The work was created in 1962 and thus belongs to the artist's last creative years. In this late phase of his work, Breinlinger developed a free, spontaneous and increasingly reduced visual language that clearly departed from academic figure painting.
The elegant lines and almost calligraphic treatment of the figure make the piece appear both modern and timeless. As an original work by a listed German artist, it possesses both decorative and collector appeal.
About the artist Hans Breinlinger
Hans Breinlinger (1888–1963) was born in Konstanz and is considered one of the most important artistic figures of the Lake Constance region. He was a painter, graphic artist, and photographer. After his apprenticeship, he studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts under Wilhelm Trübner. Throughout his life, he worked in Konstanz, Berlin, and undertook numerous study trips throughout Europe.
Breinlinger exhibited regularly in the 1920s and 1930s and was connected to the Berlin art scene. After the Second World War, he returned to Konstanz, where he worked as curator of the Wessenberg Gallery. His extensive oeuvre includes landscapes, figurative paintings, religious art, stained glass windows, and expressive, increasingly abstract compositions.
