Signed ceramic figure by Práxedes Caro Antigüeno (1915–1994)
This handmade black ceramic figurine comes from Quinchamalí, Chile, and is signed by the renowned ceramicist Práxedes Caro Antigüeno.
Práxedes Caro is considered one of the most influential artists of the traditional black ceramics of Quinchamalí, whose visual language continues to influence the national arts and crafts of Chile.

    Práxedes Caro
She is considered a key figure in the black pottery of Quinchamalí.
Historically documented, multiple award winner (Tanagra 1953).
Her works are collected in museums and are considered culturally significant.
The typical shape (equestrian figure / animal figure) is one of their iconic motifs.

The market for authentic Quinchamalí pottery has grown significantly since 2020.

Born as the daughter of Petrona Antigüeno, she continued the family tradition and passed on her knowledge to the next generation – especially to her daughter Inés, who carried on the craft.

Her work has received numerous awards:
In 1953 she received the First Prize in Alfarería at the Salón Nº XXIII of the Grupo Tanagra in Chillán, especially for her iconic depictions of Huasos, Chinas and horses.

The historian Adolfo Márquez Esparza, who knew her personally for decades, describes her influence as follows:

"She brought the folk art of Quinchamalí to national stages, such as the exhibition in the Parque Forestal in Santiago in 1959. Her horses and guitars had their own, distinctive signature. She trained other ceramic artists, generously shared her knowledge, and was always open to conversations, photos, and the sharing of her vernacular art."
