  • Details
Large box nativity scene made of floral painted wood, with two hinged doors, three compartments filled with numerous and detailed figures and objects made of hand-modeled and polychrome plaster,

This retablo originates from the Ayacucho (Huamanga) region of Peru, the center of the Andean retablo tradition. Since the 18th century, local artists have been crafting these portable altars, originally for religious displays. From the 20th century onward, retablos evolved into vibrant miniature worlds depicting festivals, music, dance, crafts, rituals, and village scenes.

The doors are richly painted, often with floral motifs, and open onto a detailed interior with hand-sculpted figures made of composition, plaster, or wood, each individually painted. The scenes in your retablos depict, among other things:

    – Musician ensembles
    – Parties
    – Processions
    – Animal figures (e.g., cow, bull)
    – Multi-level scenes with spectators and actors

These pieces are not merely decorative, but authentic folk art that preserves the cultural identity of the Andes. Each retablo is unique and bears the signature of its respective artisan.
