Set of 4 stage sets (scene design) for a theatre production - Oscar Wilde - painted by Hermann Alberti 1940 - stage or theatre artist or stage designer.
The sheets bear notes from various directors and project managers from Hamburg, Leipzig and Nuremberg (including Karl Jüng, Karl-Ginz, Horst Jürs), as was common in theatre workshops and training institutions for stage painting.

For sale is a complete set of three original stage design sketches by the German stage designer Hermann Alberti, dated 1947, for Oscar Wilde's "Bamberg".
The works depict different scene designs from the same production and together form a coherent series. Such designs were created as binding templates for directing and stage design at city and state theaters and are now rare surviving testimonies of theater history.

    Technology:
Mixed media - watercolor / gouache + ink
Very precise lines → a stage designer trained in craftsmanship, not an expressionist free spirit.

The design is typical of the classically minimalist theater style of the 1930s and 40s in Germany: clear architecture, a calm color palette, and a functional spatial arrangement. Hermann Alberti is known to have worked as a set designer at German municipal theaters. His works are now rare historical documents of theatrical practice.

A historical document of the theatre industry around 1940, Hermann Alberti was presumably the stage designer of the Heidelberg City Theatre.
