The name Mary Gregory stands for a special form of Victorian stained glass that was especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Typical examples are white enamel paintings on colored glass (usually in cobalt, green, or ruby red tones) depicting children in rural or playful scenes—often with flowers, butterflies, nets, or bubbles.
Although the name refers to an American artist, many of these glasses were actually made in Bohemia (today's Czech Republic) and Austria, where a long tradition of fine enamel and stained glass painting existed as early as the 19th century.
The "Mary Gregory" design symbolizes the nostalgic romance and innocent childhood of the Victorian era. It was created for both collectibles and decorative tableware and remains popular with vintage lovers to this day.
