Livio Seguso
Livio Seguso (born 1930 in Venice, Italy) comes from an old Venetian glassmaking family. He is one of the few maestros in the lagoon city who sought and succeeded in connecting with the developments in international studio glass in the 1970s. At the age of fourteen, he began his apprenticeship as a glassblower with one of the greats, Alfredo Barbini. Seguso remained as an assistant in his workshop until 1960, when he himself became a master glassblower, a maestro, at Salvati & C. Here he worked closely with artistic director Luciano Gaspari (1913-2007), a painter trained at the Academy of Fine Arts. Drawing on the experience of the 1950s, when Venetian glass combined the fortunate combination of artisanal perfection with an interest in the avant-garde concepts of form and decoration of the time, the owners of the glassworks encouraged their masters to realize their own ideas alongside working with other people's designs. Meanwhile, however, a mood had once again prevailed in which Murano was self-sufficient. Its great strength, the diversity of technical possibilities and the inexhaustible potential of skilled glassblowers, became a weakness: the perfection of the working technique was placed above design, and given Murano's great tradition, with a few exceptions, such as Venini, little attention was paid to what was happening outside. Due to a lack of artistic training, the maestros' efforts to create their own designs "often ended in an undefined no-man's-land between art, artistry, and craftsmanship," as Helmut Ricke puts it. Only in isolated cases were excellent results achieved. Truly great achievements are achieved by few, and “the only one among the master glassblowers who has fully embraced the step toward free glass design is Livio Seguso.”
