Dan (Daniel) Karner was a French designer and craftsman who worked in Paris in the 1930s, where he had a workshop and showroom. He worked mostly alone with apprentices and specialized in carved wooden objects such as bookends, cocktail accessories, desk accessories and lamps. His creations had a sophisticated elegance and were produced in limited editions. One morning in 1940 he did not show up to open his workshop. Karner was of Jewish descent and it is believed that he left Paris and crossed the Pyrenees to escape the German occupation of Paris. After World War II he did not return to France. Some of his works are signed and marked "Creaciones - Barcelona - Spain". This may indicate that he managed to travel to Spain and to freedom and was able to resume his activity in Barcelona.
