Timo Sarpaneva, who would become one of Finland's most celebrated designers after the war, was born in Helsinki in 1926 into a family of blacksmiths and textile artists. He studied graphic design and technical drawing at Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu (now Aalto University School of Arts, Design & Architecture) between 1941 and 1948. In 1949 he won a prize for glass design from the Riihimäki Glassworks and the following year was hired by Karhula-Iittala as a designer and exhibition programmer. Sarpaneva's designs for Iittala brought both him and the company international fame, particularly through exhibitions at the Triennale di Milano during the 1950s.
