The Elsterwerda-Biehla earthenware factory in the Elbe-Elster district of Brandenburg was founded in 1900 and, after several dismantling operations (including during the Soviet occupation and the post-reunification period), was finally shut down in the early 2000s. With up to over 400 employees in the 1940s, the stoneware factory was for a long time one of the city's largest employers. Many well-known artists such as Ursula Fesca, Grete Gottschalk and Franz Eggert worked for the company. The vessel designer and ceramic engineer Erich Krause, who had been employed since 1932, took over the technical and artistic management of the company from 1948 to 1976. He and his designers established - also in collaboration with Margarete Jahny from the Institute for Applied Arts - new decors and shape designs that significantly modernized ceramic design in the GDR.
